Kerala Tops Niti Aayog’s School Education Quality Index List

Kerala has emerged on top among 20 large states in terms of quality of school education, followed by Rajasthan and Karnataka, while the most-populous Uttar Pradesh was ranked at the bottom position during 2016-17, according to a report released by the Niti Aayog. The overall performance score for the large states ranged from 76.6 percent for Kerala to 36.4 percent for Uttar Pradesh.
The report, titled ‘The Success of Our Schools-School Education Quality Index’ (SEQI) and jointly released by the Niti Aayog, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the World Bank. Among eight smaller states, Manipur, Tripura and Goa bagged the top-three positions. Of the seven UTs, Chandigarh came at the top position, followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Delhi, Puducherry, Daman & Diu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.


DRDO test-fires BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

Defence Research and Development Organization, DRDO, successfully test-fired a land-attack version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile off the coast of Odisha from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur. The missile, with a strike range of 290km, can be fired from land as well as sea-based platforms. It has been fitted with increased indigenous equipment and is a version used by the Army.

Commemorating Lal Bahadur Shashtri’s 113th birth anniversary on October 2, a new book will shed light on the early influences, political associations and defining historical decisions of India’s second prime minister. Written by political analyst Sandeep Shastri, the book, “Lal Bahadur Shastri: Politics and Beyond”, is published by Rupa Publications. Famous for the inspiring slogan, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, Shastri’s prime ministership saw India ensuring respect for its farmers and soldiers.

RBI sets WMA Limit for Government of India at Rs 35000 for the second half of FY 2019-20

The Reserve Bank of India, in consultation with the Government of India, has decided that the limits for Ways and Means Advances (WMA) for the second half of the financial year 2019-20 (October 2019 to March 2020) will be Rs. 35,000 crore. The interest rate on WMA will be Repo Rate and overdraft will be 2% above the Repo Rate.

Coleman wins men’s 100m in World Athletics Championships

American Christian Coleman scorched to the 100 meters world championship gold medal. Coleman, silver medallist behind Justin Gatlin two years ago in London, did his part to send a jolt of excitement through a thin audience by turning the tables on his teammate in a season’s best time of 9.76 seconds. The 37-year-old Gatlin continued to prove he is one of sprinting’s big-time performers, however, grabbing silver in 9.89. Canadian Andre De Grasse completed the podium by clocking 9.90 to take the bronze.


Fraser-Pryce wins women’s 100m in World Athletics Championships

Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her fourth women’s 100 meters world title in Doha in stunning style. The 32-year-old — also a two-time Olympic champion — coasted to an impressive victory in a world-leading time for the year of 10.71 seconds. Britain’s European champion Dina Asher-Smith took silver in a national record of 10.83 seconds whilst 2017 silver medalist Marie-Josee Ta Lou took the bronze in 10.90.


Sumit Nagal wins men’s singles title ATP Challenger Tournament

In Tennis, Sumit Nagal has won the men’s singles title of ATP Challenger Tournament at Buenos Aires in Argentina. He defeated local favorite Facundo Bognis in straight-sets 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 37-minute match to claim the 54,160 US dollars prize money. The 22-year-old from Haryana jumped 26 spots to achieve a career-best ranking of 135.


Wilson Singh-Satish Kumar pair wins gold at Asian Age Group C’ships

In Swimming, India’s N Wilson Singh and Satish Kumar Prajapati produced impressive performances to win a gold medal in 10 meters platform synchronized event at the ongoing 10th Asian Age Group Championships in Bengaluru. The duo scored 290.19 scores to beat Uzbekistan’s Zaynetdinov Marsel and Khasanov Botir, who scored 280.53 points.


Bhavani Devi clinches silver in Belgium meet

Indian fencer C. A. Bhavani Devi clinched the silver medal in the women’s sabre individual category in the Tournoi satellite competition (World level) at Ghent, Belgium. Bhavani lost 15-10 to Anna Bashta of Azerbaijan in the final.

Scientist Thanu Padmanabhan gets MP Birla Memorial Award

Physicist Thanu Padmanabhan received the M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology. Padmanabhan, a professor of Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, received the award at a program held at M P Birla Planetarium Kolkata. Padmanabhan, a visiting faculty to several institutes in the US and the UK, has contributed to the fields of general relativity, gravitation and cosmology, said the release, adding he is currently also an adjunct faculty member of IISER (Mohali), IISER (Trivandrum) and Jamia Millia Islamia.


Minor Planet Named After Pandit Jasraj, First Indian Musician to Receive this Honour

The minor planet between Mars and Jupiter has been named after Pandit Jasraj, the doyen of Indian classical vocal music. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named minor planet 2006 VP32 (number -300128), discovered on November 11, 2006, as ‘Panditjasraj’. With this honor, Padma Vibhushan recipient Pandit Jasraj has become the first Indian musician to join the galaxy of immortal composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj is an exponent of Indian classical vocal music.


Veteran Actor Viju Khote Passed Away

Veteran Hindi and Marathi film-theatre actor Viju Khote passed away due to multiple organ failure. He was 77. The actor, most famous for playing the dacoit Kalia in “Sholay” and Robert in “Andaz Apna Apna”. Khote featured in popular films like “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”, “Ventilator” and the TV show “Zabaan Sambhalke”. n a career spanning around six decades, Khote worked in over 300 films, including “Phir Hera Pheri”, Andaz Apna Apna,” besides some television shows and ads.
